San Diego Black Out – I need a battery operated phone charger!
When the power first goes out it’s really no big deal. If you’re at work you all gather in the lobby and have a chat. If you’re at home you take the kids outside and talk with your neighbors. If you’re lucky you can communicate via phone calls and text messages with your spouse or children. Then after a couple of hours pass with no power, as were texting to our hearts content; it dawns on us...what if the power doesn't come on before my battery dies? Then it becomes a big deal. The hairs on the back of my neck start to tingle.
Such was the case last night when the lights went out for 1.4 million people in San Diego County. I went to bed last night with a few drops of power left on my phone, which I had powered off to conserve incase of a bigger emergency.
So I have made my decision to get a battery operated or solar phone charger. It's at the top of my list. I can't be totally without communication. I found myself thinking while I was typing these “notes-to-self” about this black out experience: “what happens when my iPad runs out of juice? Am I going to have to right this post by hand?” Heaven forbid…
Battery operated phone chargers come in all shapes and sizes. Our recommendation is an emergency radio with a built in phone charger; together will lots of other emergency tools such as self-powered digital AM/FM/SW/NOAA, S.A.M.E. weather radio with flashlight, siren, and solar power. We offer a couple in the PrepareWell Store at great prices (especially if you purchase your Family Emergency Plan first). Our Family Safety Plan outlines everything you need to do; and a items you should probably buy (at member prices) to keep your family safe and protected in any emergency situation.
Here is an additional embarrassing tidbit: We actually had a super duper radio like the one mentioned above during the San Diego blackout. It was at the office; set aside in case of emergency - I just forgot I had it. My plan is to get one to keep in the trunk of each of our cars; one for home and REMEMBER where I put the one at the office.
