San Diego Black Out – Solar Lights are Awesome
As I am sitting at my desk in San Diego working away this past Thursday afternoon, September 8th, the first regret I have when the power goes out, believe it or not, is not using the ladies room earlier! And now it's going to be dark in there! Leave it to my husband to save the day as he comes out of his office holding this great new solar powered light. I am going to buy 10 of these - if my computer ever comes back to life. These little gems are awesome! Totally re-charged by the sun; even have an on & off switch. Really the coolest things. Thumbs up to the Nokero people for inventing these amazing little solar power lights.
San Diego Black Out – I need a battery operated phone charger!
When the power first goes out it’s really no big deal. If you’re at work you all gather in the lobby and have a chat. If you’re at home you take the kids outside and talk with your neighbors. If you’re lucky you can communicate via phone calls and text messages with your spouse or children. Then after a couple of hours pass with no power, as were texting to our hearts content; it dawns on us...what if the power doesn't come on before my battery dies? Then it becomes a big deal. The hairs on the back of my neck start to tingle.San Diego Black Out – Why Water Storage is Essential
Food and water storage are a big part of emergency preparedness. While I do have a 125 gallon drum of water in my garage and some rather large cans of food storage, I can't tell you the number of times I have passed up grabbing a big packet of water bottles (even when they were on sale) because I just didn't want to be bothered with carrying them. So while the 125 gallons would come in handy for washing, toilet water, etc., I had exactly two bottles of drinking water when the lights went out in San Diego on September 8th. San Diego Black Out – Always have gas in your tank
So, it’s a Thursday afternoon, like any other Thursday afternoon. Working on my website…a family emergency preparedness website. Yup, so I know this stuff. Next thing I know, the lights go out; computer screens go black. And I just sit there for a minute, mildly annoyed, thinking it will just be a minute and all will be up and running again. Not today.San Diego Black Out – 10 Things we Learned

We already know these 10 things. We’re just too busy to implement them. Shame on us! We have spent the past 2 years researching and creating an emergency preparedness website! So, yes this is a bit embarrassing!San Diego Black Out – Communication is Key
This really hit home with me. We learned rather quickly that when people panic they want to get in touch with the ones they love. At first it's more curiosity than panic. We start calling our kids and spouses to say "Did your power go out? Well, ours did..." Then, when we begin to realize how massive a deal this is; a little bit of a creepy feeling wells up inside. And it begins to spread as we realize how limited we are without power. And especially how that impacts our ability to communicate with those we care about.Family Safety Tips: Preventing Kitchen Fires

Crime Never Takes a Vacation: Travel Emergency Preparedness Planning

Safety Tips About Phone Numbers

Do your children know your phone number?
This may seem like a silly question, but in the day and age of pre-programmed telephones and cell phones, no one memorizes phone numbers any more. But what happens if your child needs to contact you and does not happen to have their pre-programmed cell phone with them? They must be able to tell emergency personnel how to contact you.
A Safe Walk to School

When your kids head out the door for school, you want them to have the safety savvy to handle this big step. They need a certain level of independence as they begin their school year, but before we turn them loose to walk to school or the bus stop, it's time to review some back-to-school safety tips.
